DISCURSO DA PRESIDENTE DA ASSEMBLEIA NACIONAL DE ANGOLA, CAROLINA CERQUEIRA>>La Importance of the 147th IPU Assembly for Angola>

CAROLINA CERQUEIRA ADVOCATES A CREDIBLE, STRONG AND DEMOCRATIC PARLIAMENT

Carolina Cerqueira 2022The Speaker of the National Assembly (AN) called today, at an extraordinary meeting of the conference of leaders of the parliamentary benches, for the participation and involvement of parliamentarians in the preparatory work for the 147th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) that Angola will host in October.

Cerqueira also said that exemplary behaviour was expected from all Members of Parliament at all times to strengthen the unity, cohesion and commitment of all so that, through urban debate and dialogue and constructive debate, conflicts could be settled and ideas could be put forward to reaffirm the central role of this sovereign body in the democratic rule of law.

Speaking to journalists after the extraordinary meeting of the leaders' conference, Américo Cunoca, first vice-president of the AN, explained that today's meeting aimed to adjust the agenda that will be discussed tomorrow (22) at the leaders' conference, with Carolina Cerqueira noting the pressing need for parliamentarians "to participate actively and successfully" in the IPU meeting to be held next October, at which Angola will host more than 1,700 parliamentarians from different parliaments.

"There is a need for everyone's involvement, especially those in working groups created for this purpose," said the AN vice-president.

On internal issues, the leaders' conference addressed the need for MPs to excel "in good conduct, to be a model, an example, because they have a privileged space where they can present the concerns and worries of their constituents, that is, of the people.

"That space is the National Assembly, which is a space of democracy, coexistence, stability, peace and national reconciliation and the Members of Parliament must be a model in transmitting this peaceful coexistence of citizens," he added.

"We must be a space of peace, of brotherhood, and this can 'infect' and help our people on this path of brotherhood, brotherhood without problems," he said, reinforcing that "any unseemly conduct by an MP can affect the institution", whose "central focus is the defence of the state and public interests, with the nation as the central focus of our work."
