President of the National Assembly emphasizes multilateralism in defense of peace

Geneva (16/05) - The President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, spoke today, Thursday, in Geneva (Switzerland), on the subject of the state of the world and the future of multilateralism, where she reiterated that the 6th World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments in 2025 will take place in a context of global and regional crisis.

Until Friday, the Angolan parliamentarian is taking part in the first meeting of the Preparatory Commission for the 6th World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments, to be held between July and August 2025.

In her speech, she emphasized that multilateralism, principles and values in defense of peace must be strengthened through diplomacy, solidarity and parliamentary cooperation, as well as the permanent link between governments and civil society.

Carolina Cerqueira also spoke about the inclusion of young people in parliaments and recognizing the contribution of women in decision-making, especially at a political level, in a spirit of collaboration, based on UN resolutions and the procedures that must be implemented by member states.

He also reaffirmed the commitment of Angola and its institutions to the values and principles of democracy and the need for strong and credible institutions, as recommended at the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held in Luanda in October 2023, which for the first time elected an African woman as President of this important parliamentary cooperation organization, Tulia Ackson.

The meeting, held at the headquarters of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), brings together the 21 members elected at the Executive Committee meeting last April in Geneva, and is part of the inter-parliamentary union's strategy focused on the current challenges of world peace, sustainable development and democracy.

The current President of the IPU, Tanzanian Tulia Ackson, is leading the meeting, which at the opening session included a presentation by the Secretary General of the multilateral organization, Martin Chungong, on the background to the Presidents' Conferences and their expected impact in the future.

The Preparatory Commission also invited the former director-general of the UN offices in Geneva, Maichael Möler, to the session, as well as the director of the UN Secretary-General's office for contributions on cooperation between the UN and the IPU.

On the first of the two days of work, the meeting analyzed the state of the world and the future of multilateralism, as well as the links between the Conference of Presidents and the main international processes.

The President of the National Assembly is taking part in the African group together with her counterparts from Côte d'Ivoire, Tanzania, Algeria and Nigeria, members of the Preparatory Committee for the 6th World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments.

Representatives from the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Arab Group, Eurasia and the twelve plus group comprising Canada and Malta are also taking part.

According to the agenda, a meeting of women Presidents of Parliaments is planned to prepare for the Summit of Women Presidents in 2025, which will precede the Conference of Presidents to be informed by a gender perspective.

The IPU organizes this meeting in collaboration with the UN offices in Geneva. Founded in 1889, it is one of the oldest political organizations in the world and currently has more than 46,000 members from 179 national parliaments, promoting peace and democracy.

The President of the National Assembly is accompanied by the President of the IPU monitoring group, MP Maria Idalina Valente, and the Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Margarida Izata.

PRESS RELEASE
Geneva, Switzerland (27/10) - Angola congratulated the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) on the quality of its Strategic Plan 2022-2027, organized around five pillars centered on industrialization, exports and investment promotion, trade facilitation and logistics, implementation and taking advantage of the opportunities of the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA), trade relations and unified engagement with third parties, and finance and resource mobilization.

Angola's position was expressed by Ambassador Margarida Izata, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Angola to the United Nations Office and other Organizations in Geneva, during the 15th SACU trade policy review, which took place from the 25th to the 27th of this month at the headquarters of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva.

The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Angola to the UN in Geneva emphasized the importance of the data contained in the official SACU report and the Secretariat's detailed report on the last eight years of economic and trade processes in the members of the Customs Union, namely the Republic of Botswana, the Kingdom of Eswatini, the Kingdom of Lesotho, the Republic of Namibia and the Republic of South Africa, countries with which Angola shares a long-standing friendship and significant trade partnerships.

On the other hand, he noted the importance of SACU's organizational structure, which includes effective, transparent and democratic institutions that share equitable trade benefits, with the aim of, among other things, promoting conditions for fair competition in the Common Customs Area, substantially increasing investment opportunities, improving economic development, diversification, industrialization and the competitiveness of member states, and promoting the integration of this region into the Global Economy, by strengthening trade and investment.

He also said that Angola aims to gradually but robustly increase trade with SACU member states, with the aim of promoting co-operation and mutual investment, which are crucial for the country's economic recovery and as a means of improving sustainable development in the SADC region.

In this regard, he mentioned the great contribution that the "Lobito Corridor" could make, as an infrastructure project linking Angola to Zambia and the DRC by rail and which aims to facilitate access to the Port of Lobito, triggering economic development not only in the southern region, but also throughout the African continent.

Finally, it recognized SACU as an essential organization for promoting trade and development in the Multilateral Trading System, as well as with the WTO.

The Southern African Customs Union (SACU) is one of the oldest functioning customs unions in the world and has successfully facilitated the cross-border movement of goods between member states over the last decade.

Within the context of the SACU member states, Angola's main trading partner is the Republic of South Africa, but Angola also has an emerging trade activity with the Republic of Botswana, the Kingdom of Eswatini, the Kingdom of Lesotho and the Republic of Namibia.

LAUNCHING THE DAY OF PEACE AND RECONCILIATION IN AFRICA

pr joao laurenco

The President of the Republic of Angola, João Lourenço, addressed Africa today (31/01/2023) as the African Union Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in the continent, through a (virtual) message delivered at a session of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union held this Tuesday in Addis Ababa.
The message marked the launch of the "Day of Peace and Reconciliation in Africa," which will now be commemorated every year on 31 January, in accordance with the Declaration of the 16th Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union, held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, on 28 May 2022.
In the inaugural message of the new date on the African political calendar, the Angolan President made it clear that "it is only possible to achieve peace and reconciliation in Africa with actions aimed at creating a spirit of trust and unity in diversity for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts.
João Lourenço drew attention to "the serious problems we face in Africa where, unfortunately, armed conflicts worsen the scourge of hunger, misery and disease, cause forced migrations of populations, drive away foreign private investment, increase unemployment, as well as other evils that affect the daily lives of thousands of citizens".
The Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa called for us to "definitively leave behind the troubled past of disagreement, disharmony and discord that has conditioned and compromised the execution of development strategies that would help boost our economic growth and place us at an acceptable level of competitiveness with other regions of the world."
"This old dream is achievable if we all work together to achieve a definitive peace across the continent, declaring zero tolerance to terrorism, coups d'état and inter-ethnic, inter-religious and wars between neighbouring countries. For Africa to be a continent of peace, reconciliation and economic development, it depends above all on us, the politicians, the rulers and the African citizens. - defended the Angolan leader.
For Africa and in summary, the Champion of Peace and National Reconciliation asked that "all our energies, talents and resources of all kinds, be devoted first and foremost to the economic and social development of our countries."
